Farewell Hajj and the Contextualization of Human Rights Education: A Linguistic Analysis of the Text of the Prophet's Sermon

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the content and meaning of the sermon text delivered by the Prophet Muhammad SAW during the farewell pilgrimage. The interpretation of the text's content and its contextualization in Human Rights Education is a relatively new topic in order to improve the quality of the Hajj pilgrimage. This study focuses on five texts of the Prophet Muhammad SAW's farewell sermons and is analyzed using a text linguistics approach, by applying the meaning of the text as a communication event that is full of context and messages through 7 levels: cohesion, coherence, intentionality, acceptability, informativity, situationality, and intertextuality. The findings of this study indicate that the intentionality of the farewell sermons delivered four times in Multazam, Arafah, and twice in Mina contains a deep communication message about the significance of human rights values, such as the right to life, property rights, equality rights, the right to maintain honor, and the right to brotherhood, in everyday life. Improving the quality of the Hajj pilgrimage rituals and its mabrur is determined by Human Rights Education based on the farewell sermon. Contextualization of human rights education is seen as a major factor in the mental, spiritual and moral transformation of Hajj pilgrims.
